All about International Day of the Girl

This year  #dayofthegirl focuses on the challenges girls have in getting work, education and training. If they have the right support during adolescence girls have the potential to change the world – both as the empowered girls of today and as for tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders.

We know that simply having a period can have a negative impact on the education of girls globally –including the UK.

For many girls, menstruation can mean being banished from the house (like our founder), not having access to sanitary products, being embarrassed about asking for sanitary products, missing classes at school or even dropping out of school altogether.

WUKA Teens was created to help combat the embarrassment many girls feel about having a period. We want WUKA to bring a positive message and a sense of empowerment, to break taboos around menstruation.

It’s simple to wear WUKA for your period – girls can wear them just like ordinary underwear but WUKA are made with ultra-soft, very absorbent material. Girls can wear them all day at school and during sports activities. One of our customers has even worn WUKA to complete the London Marathon!

To celebrate this wonderful occasion we were invited by ArtCan a non-profit arts organisation that supports artists through profile raising activities and exhibitions to come and talk about why we started WUKA.

Artcan , Ruby, Catherine Fenton

Our founder spoke about struggles of being a woman in the world, especially growing up in a developing nation with very little opportunity. Her experiences of Chaupadi and how periods are great obstacles in girl education, even today!

We met Vanna Derosas from Hibiscus Initiatives who champions the rights of marginalised women and provide practical support talked about the risks of girls and young women being trafficked and how we can spot the signs of these vulnerable girls in working in our own society.

We really hope you will make this day a wonderful day for all the girls in the world. A very Happy International Day of the Girl Child.

Lastly, do use the #dayofthegirl #freedomsforgirls #wukateens for any tweets and tags and we will try and retweet all.
